Graphene oxide

Graphene Oxide (GO) is an oxidised form of graphene, typically produced by treating graphite with strong oxidising agents (e.g., using the Hummers method). It contains various oxygen-containing functional groups and has unique properties that make it useful for diverse applications like sensors, membranes, and composites.

PROPERTIES of graphene oxide

Picture
Layered structure: GO is composed of single or few-layer graphene sheets decorated with oxygen-containing groups.
Interlayer spacing: Larger than that of graphene due to the presence of oxygen groups and intercalated   water molecules.
Picture
Hydrophilic: Disperses well in water and other polar solvents due to oxygen groups.
Large surface area:  Offers high surface-to-volume ratio, useful for adsorption and catalysis.
Barrier properties:  Acts as an effective barrier in films due to tight stacking of layers.

Oxygen functional groups: OH, –COOH, epoxy, and carbonyl groups on the basal plane and edges.
High chemical reactivity: Hydrophilic, chemically active, and easily dispersible in water and polar solvents.
Functionalization:  Can be chemically modified or reduced to tailor its properties.

Strong and stable: High young modulus and intrinsic strength, high strength to weight ratio, zero effective mass impermeable to gases high mobility of charge carriers
Flexible and thin:  GO films are flexible and can be layered into membranes or composites.

Why Graphene Oxide?
Graphene Oxide (GO) is a revolutionary material with a wide range of applications across industries. It is used in the development of advanced products such as sports equipment, footwear, microphones, light bulbs, art materials, wearables, and much more.

We specialize in the production of high-quality Graphene Oxide, which serves as a key component in building eco-friendly infrastructures—for instance, asphalt road surfaces enhanced with Graphene Oxide are more sustainable, durable, and environmentally friendly compared to conventional construction methods.

Applications of Graphene Oxide

Graphene Oxide (GO) is synthesized through the controlled oxidation of graphite, producing a material with exceptional mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, surface area, and functionalization potential. Owing to these unique physicochemical properties, Graphene Oxide finds application across a wide spectrum of advanced technologies and industrial sectors.

1. Electronics and Semiconductors
Graphene Oxide serves as a precursor for the development of graphene-based electronic components, thin-film transistors, and flexible electronic circuits, where its tunable conductivity and transparency are leveraged for high-performance devices.

2. Energy Harvesting and Storage Systems
GO plays a critical role in batteries, supercapacitors, and energy-harvesting systems, enhancing charge capacity, electrode conductivity, and cycle stability. It is also used in graphene-modified anodes and cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.

3. Agriculture and Biofertilizers
In agricultural science, Graphene Oxide is employed to develop graphene-based fertilizers and biowaste-derived nanocomposites, which promote nutrient efficiency, soil moisture retention, and sustainable crop yield.

4. Construction and Cementitious Materials
In the construction industry, GO enhances cement hydration, mechanical strength, and crack resistance, leading to the production of durable and sustainable concrete composites for infrastructure applications.

5. Polymers, Elastomers, and Packaging
Graphene Oxide is incorporated into plastics, polymers, elastomers, leathers, and food packaging materials, improving mechanical reinforcement, barrier properties, and thermal stability, while maintaining environmental safety.

6. Paints, Coatings, and Antimicrobial Formulations
Due to its large surface area and functional groups, GO is utilized in anti-corrosive coatings, antibacterial primers, and anti-mosquito formulations, providing enhanced durability and bioactive protection.

7. Textile Industry
GO-functionalized textiles exhibit antibacterial, antistatic, and thermal-regulating properties, making them suitable for smart fabrics, protective clothing, and medical wearables.

8. Water Filtration and Desalination
Graphene Oxide membranes are used in nanofiltration and reverse osmosis systems, enabling efficient desalination, heavy metal removal, and radioactive waste purification through nanoporous selectivity and high permeability.

9. Sensors and Aerospace Applications
GO-based nanocomposites are applied in chemical, biological, and mechanical sensors, as well as in aerospace materials, where lightweight strength and conductivity are crucial for high-performance systems.

10. Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Applications
In the biomedical domain, Graphene Oxide is used for drug delivery, tissue engineering, gene therapy, cancer diagnostics, DNA sequencing, and vaccine development. Its ability to interact with biomolecules at the nanoscale enables smart nanodrug formulations, targeted therapies, and rapid neutralization systems. Furthermore, GO is incorporated into sanitary and healthcare products, offering antibacterial activity, pain relief, and enhanced thermal management
